I know “magic is dead” has been said over and over again but this time I feel like it might really be it for me. Half the set is standard are not magic anymore and I have no hope of that changing. It’s just become “Recognizable IP: the gathering”.
I am sure the game will keep going, hell I’ll probably still proxy commanders decks and play kitchen table from time to time, but for me personally the MAGIC part of magic the gathering is no longer a thing. And any hope that wizards would start caring for any constructed format also got killed with standard UB announcement.
I can’t stop feeling bitter and that UB killed the magic I loved.
Universes Beyond is Divisive
1. Magic is Changing
For many the magic of MTG is in the original fantasy world. Dominaria, Ravnica and Innistrad have deep history and lore that players have invested in over years. When half the upcoming sets feature characters from Marvel or Warhammer it’s natural to feel like the magic of MTG is being watered down. It’s not just about change – it’s about losing the fantasy.
2. UB in Standard – A Bridge Too Far?
Crossovers in Commander or Secret Lair products have been fine, as they sit outside the main competitive formats. But making UB sets legal in Standard and other constructed formats feels like overreach for some players. Standard has always been the showcase for the core MTG story and mechanics. Spider-Man vs Sheoldred might be fun for some but for others it breaks the immersion.
3. New Players vs. Old Guard
UB sets have brought in new players for sure. Marvel fans, Warhammer enthusiasts and Lord of the Rings devotees now have a way into MTG. That’s growth and that’s good for the game’s long term. But it’s also created a divide. Veterans who have been playing MTG for decades feel left behind as the game shifts towards broader appeal rather than deeper into its own IP.
Universes Beyond
1. The Game Needs to Grow
MTG must grow to live. The gaming world is crowded and new players are essential. UB collaborations keep the game relevant and fresh. Many players who started with Warhammer or 40k Commander decks have gone on to play traditional MTG sets.
2. Design Space
UB sets give Wizards of the Coast a chance to try new mechanics and ideas. The Warhammer 40k decks introduced new cards that fit perfectly into the MTG framework. That’s good for the game and good for seasoned players.
3. More Options
For those who hate UB there’s a bright side – MTG is diverse enough to have something for everyone. Vintage, Legacy and Commander allow players to curate their experience. If UB sets aren’t your thing there’s still plenty of content rooted in classic MTG lore.
Wrapping Up
Magic is changing and with that comes growing pains. If you feel the magic is fading maybe just remember MTG has always been about the community. Whether you proxy old decks, play Commander or go all in on the crossovers the core experience of gathering around the table remains. The magic might be different but it’s not gone.
